Title: Iridescent Hummer
Artist: Kathryn Barnes
Media: Mixed Media
Chrysolampis mosquitus, a hummingbird from Brazil, has the largest area of iridescence for its body size of all of the hummers.
In the early 1900's the beautiful bird was almost extinct because of the widespread use of its brilliant feathers as ornaments in women's hats.
Today many species are threatened and nearing extinction because of the loss of rainforest to agriculture and development.
